About ...
My name's Jeanie Finlay and I'm an artist based in Nottingham, UK. You can view my work here. I set up this Blog as an online diary while I was in Japan (feb 03) making Home-Maker-Tokyo.

It's now an ongoing collection of photos, ramblings and diary.

Japan...
February was my 4th visit to Japan. In 01 I presented T3 at the Muse symposium. I then came to Tokyo on holiday Sep 02 and in Dec 02 won a web prize in the Canon Digital Creators Contestfor Home Maker, my trip was co funded by EMMedia. This led to Muse Company commissioning Home Maker Tokyo.

It's finally happened, I'm the pregnancy cliche that craves coal and ebay. Something has gone awry with my hormones and all I can think about is the smell of coal dust and smoking capston super strengths. It is becoming harder by the hour to not smoke, my baby sure knows what it wants.

So, I'm under house arrest. I've been completely overdoing it in my 'blooming' state, have pulled a ligament resulting in difficulty in walking, and am now enduring enforced relaxation. I know that sounds not so bad but it's pretty painful and all of my hormones are screaming "sort your life out - work, finances, house and diy" and what is actually practical is lying down. It's very frustrating. So laptop on my knee and all the murder she wrote I can handle.

No strange cravings to report but an addiction to baking, so much so that Sheil has bought me Nigella's domestic goddess book, which I'm working my way through. Carrot cake muffins and coffee walnut drop biscuits all round.

It's been a busy few weeks with Sheffield doc fest, London film fest and a flying visit to the BBC on Wednesday. Doc fest was pretty good. A weird mix of disillusioning panels with the commisoners and controllers from 1,2,3,4,5 and further explaining what they are looking for - "eyeballs for ads" and some amazing docs. I was getting so depressed listening to the panels and watching the gladitorial open Sheffield Pitch - 12 film makers have 5 mins to pitch their idea with the carrot of a 30,000 commission dangling. The crowd and panel were ruthless. So I decided to just go watch films and it was so much better and inspiring. Highlights included Marc Isaac's Calais, Rude Girls for BBC, Jorgan Leth and Lars Von Trier The Five Obstructions, Capturing the Friedmans and The Other Final.

Much of the last six months has been spent researching and writing an application to the Arts Council to tour nationally Home-Maker Japan and Uk, side by side as a two room installation. This has been a mammouth undertaking, 7500 word application aside, the research involved connecting with different venues and galleries outside of the region has been very difficult. In my initial contacts most venues would not speak to me as I was an individual. Although I have made and shown work in 15 countries this year, it's UK galleries that count for Uk reputation. Broadway have stepped in and assisted with this (at my request) by acting as an introduction partner. This has had more positive results, fruitful meetings and if the funding goes ahead (I'll know in January) a 5 date tour around the country, web site, streamed live events and a publication. I'm keeping everything crossed and hope that all of the research pays off.

Another long term plan is starting to take shape. After 6 months development with Debbie Ballin at Intermedia I have started initial research filming on a new interactive documentary project. My last gallivant out for a while also involved meeting someone at the BBC to discuss the project as a doc commision. Again watch this space. It feels strange to be planning so far ahead - this would come to fruition in 2005, but reassuring that I may have exciting projects to come back to after having the baby.

Tv moment of the week has to Queer eye for the straight guy on Living TV. Carson, fashion queer makes Trinny and Susannah look like a couple of nuns. Fashion faux pas of the week, Xtina hosting the VMA's on MTV. Like pocket Cher who got dressed in the dark.

Almost forgot, we saw Bill Viola at the National Gallery. It's a new show from the american video artist that talks slower than a 2cv with a flat tyre. It's a real mix of mesmerising, still, extra slow mo reflections, water and fire. really stunning emotional work that is genuinely moving. The rest of the show is horrible 'inside the actors studio' style slow motion mime with extras from gap adverts. Really awful. It's just too polished, too styled and feels very distant for the audience. His earlier, rougher large scale video work in much more moving - The Messenger and The Nantes Tryptich.

Dear God, as I write my baby is doing the fandango and I'm starting to look like I've swallowed a medicine ball.

It's busy busy busy at the moment. I'm trying to get my touring application into the arts council this week before I go to the
Sheffield International Documentary Festival Thursday - Sunday.

I'll find out in 3 months time whether I can tour Home-maker UK and Japan to a range of UK venues. I really want it to come off, watch this space.

I thought I'd do a wee catch up of the stuff I've been up to over the Summer.

We went up to Edinburgh for the premiere of Cooke's film, One for the Road.

One for the Road

It was proud Aunty time, the film looked great and most of Nottingham, cast and crew, was there for the screening. Sheil shot it and my sister did the costumes so it was a real family affair. It all got a bit surreal, as we pulled up to the Cameo Cinema Cooke was having his photo taken by the press.

The next day, we sat in the pub and got the papers to read the reviews, very exciting. Plenty of 4 stars all round. You can read the Guardian Review online and there's an interview with Cooke on the Film Four website. The funniest reviews are on people's blogs. The says 'just as I thought my day couldn't get any worse, I went to see Chris Cooke's One for the Road' ha ha.

There's no distributor yet but you can see it at the London Film Festival later this month and Cooke will hilariously( as I've taken him clothes shopping and can't imagine him with a stylist) be in January's Vogue.

Cremaster Cycle

We didn't see a great deal at the festival, but managed to get tickets to a sold out screening of Cremaster Cycle by Matthew Barney. I've been dying to see this for ages as it was showing this time last year in Tokyo and we never got round to seeing it. God, it was long. Sheil described it as '3 hours he'll never get back'.

Cremaster Cycle

I was really dissapointed as I've seen stills and they look amazing, but the pace is just too slow for me. The costumes are immaculate and he introduces some striking characters but then the pace is really strange and protracted.

Cremaster Cycle

For example there is an amazing shot at the beginning of 5 chrysler cars in the foyer of the chrysler building surrounding and old chrysler car which contains an eagle and a decaying corpse. The cars then drive into the old car over and over until it is squashed into a scrap cube. It looks stunning and so different to see in a film but this destruction process takes 90 agonising minutes. It was just too much. I have to admit a certain sadistic pleasure in making Sheil sit through this. Saying all that the images have really stuck with me and I'm glad I saw it, watch the trailer on the website, at 90 secs it's the stunning images without the sore arse.

Spending a lot of time over the summer on the sofa has led to an addiction to trash novels and daytime tv.

Oh my, in Saint Mary Mead

My 2 favourites are the very proper Miss Marple and the perma-angry Quincy.

Quincy

I've also read the Thorn Birds which has led to me ordering the full mini series from Amazon. Oh my god the acting is so borderline. I've watched part 1 and am saving 2-4 for my maternity leave. I am a lucky girl.

If you've come to this page looking for news or updates recently you will have noticed that it's been very much conspicuous by it's absence! It's a long story and the brief version is the day I came back from Canada I discovered I was pregnant so I'm now 5 months pregnant and am due in February!

Needless to say it's not been how I imagined at all and I spent most of my first trimester lying on the sofa, watching daytime telly feeling almost constantly nauseous. Thankfully this hideous bit has now past and apart from an ever expanding belly I feel pretty much back to normal and keep actually forgetting, apart from when my now kicking baby gives me a little reminder. So I'm going to try and get back as I've missed my blog.

see you soon. J x
