Football fairy tale
Thursday, January 30, 2003

I'm preparing to go to Japan for a month on Monday so am doing a pretty good impression of a headless chicken at the moment.

I've been commissioned by
Muse Company to re-make Home-maker in Tokyo with 3 - 4 Japanese people. It's an amazing opportunity but I'm a bit apprehensive about pulling it all off in the time. I have a month to make the work and install it in a gallery space at the end of February.

I will be staying in a 'homestay', living in (I think) a family's home which is daunting but I'm sure will make for a more interesting visit and is sure to help my japanese. I've been learning for the past 2 years at NCN but I am far from fluent. I've always stayed at the Sawanoya before which is really peaceful after the hectic city.

In the midst of my Japan preperations today I had to pitch for First Cut, as I have been shortlisted to make a 10 minute documentary called Number one fan. It's about the passions that drive football fandom. As research for this I have been in touch with the legendary goalkeeper Jimmy Glass, who in 1999 scored the winning goal in extra time and saved carlisle from relegation. This moment is referred to as The Great Escape and is a football fairy tale. Jimmy seemed like a really interesting bloke and if I get the commission is willing to be in the documentary.
