Sars, Dead by Dawn and Canon
Thursday, May 15, 2003

Great news, Em-Media has agreed to fund our trip to the
Toronto Film Festival which means sheil, myself, Ellis and Hooks will be going to Canada. I'm excited as I've never been to North America but am a bit apprehensive about SARS, no matter what the mayor of Toronto says. In my Japanese class on Monday we learnt how to say I'm worried about SARS.

Work's very busy at the moment, researching and planning the Home-Maker tour as well as writing up new ideas and working with Tectonic. Tectonic are a company who I've designed for over the last 2 years and I'm developing a new brand for them. I always really enjoy doing brand development as you can see an idea through from start to finish, translated into print, web, postcards, signage, the lot.

Research interview

I've done a lot of interviews over the last 6 weeks or so. Clustering research, the influence of other artists work / movements on my work as an artist, being a creative industry - for new media knowledge web and a chat with a student about my experiences of 'the industry'. The 'influence' interview was pretty interesting. I was trying to think about what I'm influenced by in art, and I think although I'm interested in other people's work - david carson, jenny savage, the woman who photographs teenagers getting out of the sea, tony ousler, p&g, lucienne day. I think I'm probably as or more influenced by films, tv, books, shopping, day dreaming and Heat. She asked me to list what I read so as well as paul auster, Magnus Mills, lemony Snickett and Donna Tartt I mentioned Heat, not in an irony corner way but a genuine 'I like it' way. She asked me if my love of documentary and interest in people's lives was influenced by heat, maybe, maybe I just like gossiping about people I've never met. I've generally avoided critical theory as it seems so far removed from the work or idea it is discussing, I think you could align anything to absolutely anything if you want to. I suppose this blog is an ongoing record of the things I'm interested in.

In between all this has been a trip to Edinburgh for Dead by Dawn Dead by Dawn all night horror spectacular and a trip to London for the European Launch of the Canon exhibition of award winning work.

Edinburgh was great, me Cooke and Sheil went up to see Cry shown at the horror festival. Over the last year I have seen so many horror films I can't tell you. The horrors I watched before were mainly in my teens and started and ended with Freddy Kruger really. What I've discovered this year is that I love a bit of intrigue, don't mind beautiful blood a l argento but hate films with brains or zombies in. brain, brain, etc yawn just wake me up when it's over.
