Writing in a gossipy voice
Thursday, April 27, 2006

An interesting day of discussion around the role of writing in relation to arts practice, childcare and cake making.

I was one of 5 speakers on a discussion day called The write stuff organised by Frank Abbott for
Creative Collaborations and Sideshow. Myself, S Mark Gubb , Peter Suchins, Jared from Left Lion and Stephen Palmer from AN Magazine all talked about what role writing plays in our lives as artists or how you develop a relationship with a publication.

Preparing for the talk made me think about how I feel about writing. It's been a necessary evil in terms of making work - writing copy, web stuff and applications to festivals and for funding. It's something I've always dreaded but is an essential part of making work. When I originally set up this blog it was, in part to help me get over my fear of writing. In the process of documenting the small stories of making work and getting to grips with the complexities of making work in another country I discovered that if I imagined writing an email to someone (in my slightly gossipy voice!) rather than getting stuck into academic jargon - which is pretty much what I learnt at college - then I could get on ok. I am not making any claims for my writing in terms of skill or finesse, but the act of writing this blog has enabled me to 'practice' my writing voice and get used to putting one word after another.

Sheil dropped Betsy off at lunch time and I tried to stay for the afternoon discussion and presentation, sneaking Betsy into the cinema. Within minutes she had dropped all of her popcorn, was eating it off the floor and kept saying "mama, wee wee" so I took that as my cue to leave. Poor child, not exactly exciting stuff for a 2 year old.

After committing the ultimate blogging sin above (writing about blogging) I must now return to much more important things.

Sheil has ensured that Betsy will nurture an early fascination with all things Oz by buying her this Mega bloks version.

du da de da da daaaaaaa du de da da daaaaaa here comes the wicked witch of the west

She likes the witch the best even though dorothy's shoes light up, I think it's her interesting blue palour.

To keep up my end I am reading Wicked the story of the wicked witch of the west which is fantastic.

Six days to go until my cast and crew screening of Teenland at Broadway Cinema, frankly I'm terrified
