Another great recommendation from Karen and Jason. I raced across town to catch the (free!) staten island ferry and duely gawped from the window as the statue of liberty came into view. Even through the fog she looked familiar and unreal all at the same time. TRied hard not to feel like an extra from 'working girl' but it's hard not to refernce the many films that have been made here.
I then made it on the subway to meet up with the last third of Cactus3 - Julie after I had met Caroline and Krysanne the night before. I met Julie originally at Britdoc and Cactus3 are partners in my next project with Tigerlily films. It's incredibly exciting as I will shooting the pilot part in America and I love waht their company has worked on before - Darkon, Alexis and the pixies film loud quite loud or quite loud something. Anyway they were lovely hosts and it was great to hook up with themduring my stay. The project feels mch less abstract, much more a reality now. I think when you spend a lot of time planning and discussing work, then suddenly get the go-ahed it can be odd to make the transition but i am so excited about this one.
Some observations about NY
Tipping is complicated
Food is amazing and very varied
The city really doesn't sleep
The empire state building is populated exclusively by British teenagers
Cabs are cheap but don't always want you
It's English but not as we know it
No one knows addresses, it's all about the intersection.
I repeat me tipping is complicated
young gay men take approx double the amount of time to get ready than women do and take better care of their skin.
My accent is very difficult to understand at times.
