Artist Jeanie Finlay
will provide an opportunity for visitors to her stall at Mima to perform
a karaoke portrait on a miniature stage in exchange for tokens and kudos.
Participants will be able to choose the associated artist, lyrics and
tune, to really 'be themselves' for 3 and a half minutes on stage.
Each performance will be filmed and will form a portrait archive, published
here.
All participants will automatically be entered onto a projected leaderboard
and will be in competition to win a grand prize, given at 5pm as part
of the main prize-giving. Photographic stills of the performance with
noted details of name, age, occupation, artist and song of choice will
be available to purchase by all visitors using tokens.
Songs will performed using the Singstar PSP system which scores the participant
on tone, tuning and rhythm. The artist will also score additional points
for performance, passion and portraiture.
Remember - Bribery is encouraged at all times.
A higher place on the score board can be bought with tokens, promises
of future commissions and exchanges of contact details with curators,
artists and critics.
Make your own damn karaoke portrait will attempt to be louder and more
limelight stealing than other stalls.
This work will continue Jeanie Finlay's practice of using objects and
video to make portraits of members of the public. She will continue this
work in 2007 when she makes Please,
please, please let me get what I want, a series of video
portraits of Norwegian teenagers and their teenage anthems as an artist
in residence at Rogaland
Arts Center, Stavagner, Norway.
Will your performance
be the most heartfelt... Have you got what it takes to beat the rest...
Are you prepared to bribe your way to the top? |
